Discussion among friends on FB and in today’s New York Times has left me hankering for Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians. I studied at a place called the Center for World Music in 1975. Steve had been the composer in residence the year before, and people who worked with him were talking skeptically about how he was working on this new work “with bass clarinets!” He finished that work the following year, and it was out on ECM records in 1978. When I found it in a record store, the guy at the check-out counter said “You just bought the weirdest record in the store!” Maybe, but I knew as soon as I got home, fired up a joint, and listened to the recording, that it was some crazy kind of wonderful, a formalist work that was also playful, sensual, and deeply engaging (even when I wasn’t stoned).
